Glad I don't have children
Because if I did, I'd be one of those people worrying tonight about the data that's gone missing from the Dept of Revenue & Customs. It's pretty shocking stuff but despite that (and I realise I'll be out of synch with the rest of the world on this one), but I can't help thinking we go a bit OTT on blaming people just because they're at the top of the tree.
I am not sure what Alasdair Darling was supposed to do. You have to trust the people you employ and seeing as he employs thousands, how can he keep tabs on them all? I'm not for a second underestimating how serious this is but let's think about whose fault this is - the member of staff who did it, his manager for allowing them access to the info, his / her manager for not knowing this was going on. And yes, I know I could continue and eventually I'd get to Darling but really, we have to draw a line somewhere.
Changes have to be made, that's clear. But I don't know that we need to be calling for his resignation. If I were to do that I'd only be doing it to damage an opposing political party. Maybe I'm just feel generous tonight.
