Dimming the lights in the Parliament

The Scottish Parliament is trying to lead the way for public buildings cutting energy consumption by giving us all a telling off if we leave our computers on overnight. Quite right and seeing as I always make an effort to switch everything off (including my straighteners - just kidding) I was annoyed with myself to get an email from the IT helpdesk telling me I'd forgotten one night. So I hope it does work. Nice as it looks though I think they're going to have to go further and stop keeping lights on at night. Aileen sent out parly Christmas cards and got an email from one recipient telling her how environmentally unfriendly it was to have cards showing an image similar to the one in the picture here - with ALL the lights on! She had a point. Still, it's good to see them making a start somewhere.

Green light for a better Scotland

So, we have signed an agreement with the Scottish Green Party and I can't think of any party I'd rather be in partnership with. The SNP has always been one of the greener parties and if the Greens make us greener still, who would object? They've agreed to back Alex Salmond as First Minister and any ministerial appointments he makes. That means we can finally get on with the job of governing Scotland. In return we will support an early climate change bill. They'll take the chair of one of the committees but they're not looking for Ministerial Mondeos, they simply want to make a positive contribution to the future of Scotland. Let's all hope that the other parties have similar motives. Here's to progressive politics in Scotland.
