“35 million people went hungry last year in the richest nation in the planet”

I am quoting John Edwards, one of the USA Presidential Candidates. I have to say what I’m enjoying most about the election coverage is hearing some of the candidates talk about their people and more importantly, their people in need. What we’ve (I’ve) come to expect from the US is talk of war and oil and taking over the entire planet whilst allowing their multi nationals to completely ravage it. No doubt it’s primarily because I don’t live there that I rarely hear about their domestic politics.

So, I’m encouraged to hear Edwards get angry about, for example, women with breast cancer (a topic close to his heart) who have to beg for treatment because they can’t afford it. Can you imagine the uproar if this happened here? And it is an absolute outrage that, as Senator Edwards said, it happens in the “richest nation in the planet”. (I’m sure it should be “on” the planet but I have to quote accurately.)

I’m torn between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama but I was more impressed with Edwards than I expected to be. Exciting stuff but it’s a long road.

It’s the “CK”s in the lead

So, the results from the first caucuses (in Iowa) in the race to be President of the USA are out and here they are:

DEMOCRATS (official)

Barack Obama - 37.6%
John Edwards - 29.7%
Hillary Clinton - 29.5%
Bill Richardson - 2.1%

REPUBLICANS (96% complete)
Mike Huckabee - 34.3%
Mitt Romney - 25.3%
Fred Thomson - 13.4%
John McCain - 13.1%
Ron Paul - 10.0%
Rudy Giuliani - 3.5%

So, Barack Obama is in the lead for the Democrats and Mike Huckabee has taken 34% of the Republican vote. And have you noticed what they have in common? They both have the lucky (lu”ck”y) letter combination of “CK” in their names. None of the others do. Apparently, researchers discovered some time ago that if you have “CK” in your name you are much more likely to be successful simply because people subconsciously associate it with the word LUCKY! Interesting.
