Last Day in Parliament

Well, it’s 7.15pm and I’m about to leave my wee office in the parliament for the last time. Feel quite sad because it’s a lovely environment to be working in. The view from my desk is fantastic - I sit above the garden lobby with its glass ceiling and to the right I can see right up Arthur’s Seat lol. I think I might blog more on this later but right now I’m off to have a drink with my favourite government advisor - their proper titles are SPADs (Special Advisors) and tonight I’m just having a quick one with ginger SPAD. I like posh spad and baby spad too though lol. Right I’m off before I have time to get emotional about leaving.

Dimming the lights in the Parliament

The Scottish Parliament is trying to lead the way for public buildings cutting energy consumption by giving us all a telling off if we leave our computers on overnight. Quite right and seeing as I always make an effort to switch everything off (including my straighteners - just kidding) I was annoyed with myself to get an email from the IT helpdesk telling me I’d forgotten one night. So I hope it does work. Nice as it looks though I think they’re going to have to go further and stop keeping lights on at night. Aileen sent out parly Christmas cards and got an email from one recipient telling her how environmentally unfriendly it was to have cards showing an image similar to the one in the picture here - with ALL the lights on! She had a point. Still, it’s good to see them making a start somewhere.

Tenth Anniversary of the Scotland Act

Ten years ago today, something happened that would change the path of our country forever. On 18th December 1997, the Scotland Act was unveiled. Many people feared the “repercussions”, many scaremongered and some even threatened to leave Scotland. Who would have believed then that we would have come this far? We are so used to having our own parliament now and although it’s made mistakes, I think I’m right in saying most people agree that it’s better to make our own mistakes than have them made for us. On the whole most people can hardly remember what it was like not to have our parliament. And trust me, when we are fully Independent it won’t be long before even today’s doubters are asking “what were we so afraid of?”.
